We mark the patio shape on the ground with paint before anything moves. Then we cut out the sod and dig the pad down to grade. Sandy soil drains well, but it still gets packed down before any concrete goes on it.
Forms go up next, set to the height and the slope we want. We set the reinforcement, then pour and screed the slab flat. Once the surface firms up we run the finish and cut the joints. The slab cures on its own from there.
Plenty of Palm Bay homes came with a small slab under the lanai. We pour an extension off that slab so the space fits a table and chairs. The new pour meets the old edge at a joint that lets both slabs move on their own.
New concrete will not match old concrete in color. The old slab has years of sun and dirt on it. We can lay out the saw cuts so the seam looks planned. You can also look at patio resurfacing to bring both slabs to one surface.
The patio is often one piece of a bigger plan. We pour walkways from the driveway to the back gate, wide enough for two people to pass. A grill pad off the patio edge keeps the cart and the cooler off wet grass.

Broom finish is the standard for a concrete patio in Florida. We drag a broom over the fresh surface to leave fine lines with grip. Smooth trowel looks cleaner, but it turns slick under bare feet when it rains.

Four inches is the normal thickness for a backyard patio slab. That carries patio furniture and foot traffic with room left over. We pour thicker where a hot tub or a vehicle will sit.
Reinforcement holds the slab together if it ever cracks. Wire mesh or rebar sits up in the middle of the pour, held off the dirt. We saw cut control joints within about a day so the slab cracks in straight lines.
A dead flat patio slab causes trouble here. Brevard storms drop inches of rain in an hour, and that water has to go somewhere. We build fall into the slab, roughly an eighth to a quarter inch per foot.
The fall runs away from the house and away from the lanai door. We also look at where the water lands once it leaves the slab. Sending it against a fence line or into a low spot only moves the problem.
Screen rooms are common in Brevard, and they change how the slab gets built. The enclosure anchors into the concrete, so the edge needs enough slab to hold the track. We keep the pour thick and clean along that edge.
Tell us before the pour if a screen enclosure might go up later. We can set the slab size and the finish so the frame lands on solid concrete. Planning for it now costs far less than cutting into a finished patio.
Concrete patio contractors price by the job, and a few things move the number. Square footage comes first, then the shape. A plain rectangle forms up fast, while curves and steps take more form work. Extra thickness and a colored finish raise the number as well.
Access matters as much as size. A truck that can reach the back yard makes for a quick pour. Wheeling concrete through a side gate adds hours, and tearing out an old slab adds more. Every quote comes from looking at the actual job on site.
