What Is a Paver Overlay?

A paver overlay is a layer of thin pavers set over concrete you already have. The pavers run about an inch thick, against roughly two and a half inches for a standard paver. A standard paver also needs a sand bed and a compacted base under it. The thin version skips that work, because your slab is already the base.

The slab carries the load and the pavers carry the look. That split only works when the concrete underneath is sound. We check it first for cracks, movement, settled corners and how water leaves the surface. A slab that is solid but stained or dull is the best candidate for pavers over concrete.

Florida conditions help this method. There is no freeze-thaw here, so nothing under the pavers gets pried loose by ice each winter. What our surfaces face is heat, year round UV and heavy summer rain. Slope still has to carry water off the slab, and that is part of what we check.

Where Thin Pavers Over Concrete Work Best

Porches, patios, entries and screened lanais are the easiest jobs to do well. Foot traffic is light, the concrete is usually flat, and the edges are simple to lock down. Side walkways work the same way. Anywhere the existing concrete is sound and level, thin pavers over concrete sit tight.

Driveways ask for more. Tires turn and push sideways, so the paver has to be rated for vehicle weight. The slab has to be free of movement, and the borders have to be bonded down hard. When the concrete is cracked through or sinking, paver driveways built on a new compacted base are the better spend.

Height is the other thing to watch. A paver overlay adds about an inch and a half once the setting bed is counted. That shows up at door thresholds, slider tracks and the bottom of a step. We measure those points before quoting and plan the cuts and step wraps around them.

How We Install a Paver Overlay

Every paver overlay starts with the surface underneath. We pressure clean the slab, grind down high spots and old patch edges, and deal with cracks. Loose or flaking concrete comes off before anything gets set. Pavers only stay where the surface under them is clean and solid.

Then the layout goes down. Border courses set first along every edge, bonded so nothing creeps outward over the years. The field follows the pattern from there, with saw cuts at posts, drains, screen tracks and curves. Steps get their faces and treads wrapped so the whole surface reads as one piece.

Joint sand is swept in and set last, and the perimeter gets a final pass. Most porches and patios are done in two or three days. Bigger patios and driveway overlays run longer, and a summer storm can cost a day. You get the surface back for foot traffic quickly, and we tell you when at handoff.

When Tear-Out or a Stamped Overlay Makes More Sense

A paver overlay is only as good as the concrete under it. If the slab is broken into pieces, sinking at a corner, or holding water, pavers only hide it. Sandy soil under a poorly built slab keeps moving after the pretty surface goes on. In that case we break the concrete out and set the pavers on a compacted base.

Budget can point a different way too. When the slab is sound and the budget is tighter, a stamped concrete overlay covers more area per dollar. It stamps a pattern into a bonded layer instead of setting individual pieces. We price both when your slab can carry either one.

What Drives the Cost of a Paver Overlay

Square footage sets the starting number, and the edges set the rest. A small porch with steps takes more labor per foot than a wide open patio. Step faces, risers and tight cuts are where the hours go. Paver size and pattern matter too, since a herringbone field needs far more cuts than a running bond.

Slab condition is the other big driver, and a clean flat slab is the cheap version. Old coatings, patches and high spots take real prep before any paver goes down.
