Rockledge is the oldest city in Brevard County, and its driveways show it. Homes along Rockledge Drive sit above the coquina ledges that gave the town its name. Rockledge sits on a strip of sand between the Indian River and I-95. Sand drains fast, which helps, but it also moves under a slab that was never compacted well. That is why so many 1960s and 1970s driveways here have one panel sitting lower than the next. A paver driveway rides that movement better, since each paver settles on its own instead of cracking across a pour.
East of US 1, the lots drop toward the Indian River Lagoon and the water table sits close. Salt air comes off that water all year and works on bare concrete and the steel inside. On those lots we dig deeper, compact the base in lifts, and set the fall away from the house. We also seal stamped concrete on this side of town so the color holds against sun and salt.
Rockledge Country Club Estates went up between 1963 and 1976 around the golf course. Levitt Park sits off Fiske Boulevard, and Kings Grant dates to the same space program years. Those homes came with wide, flat driveways and a small back patio that was poured with the house. When the slab is sound but tired, paver overlays lay a new surface over it with no tear out.
Along Rockledge Drive and Barton Avenue the lots are bigger, and the shade trees are old. Roots push up old walkways, and heavy shade keeps brick and concrete damp and dark. Pavers work well there, since a lifted section can be pulled and reset on fresh base. Newer builds near Viera, like Catamaran Cove, have flat builder slabs and screened pool decks that we resurface.
